How did you hear about your internship?
I was looking for jobs and internships in the Dahlonega area during the summer of 2013 on the University’s job board and I found the position (Communications Intern) there.
What has been the most valuable (or favorite) part of the experience?
I, honestly, have enjoyed all the work I’ve done over the semester. I think the variety itself was the most beneficial and valuable aspect. I was able to write, but I wrote in new and different styles than in my academic career. I was always given opportunities to venture outside my desk to gather sources and other necessary pieces to my assignments which was an unexpected and welcomed freedom. Further, the chance to explore public relations responsibilities and develop those skills was beneficial and eye opening, as I enjoyed it and now have yet another potential career path.
How will this help you in the future?
The experiences I gained through this internship will absolutely be beneficial to me in the future. Even without a requirement in my plan of study, I would have worked one or two internships before I graduated because my past educators stressed how critical experience is in the job market. The internship has given me an opportunity to build my portfolio, my professional network, and my skill sets. It has also opened my eyes to potential career paths I would have never considered before. I plan to do another, unrelated internship before I graduate, but enjoyed working at University Relations so much that my editor and I are trying to devise a way for me to continue to work there next semester as well.
