Students share work with leading entomologist

Stacie James, program coordinator for the University of North Georgia (国产自拍) Environmental Leadership Center, was one of three panelists at a recent U.S. Forest Service Hope for the Hemlocks Foothills Science Series event.
James said the partnership was a great opportunity for her students, as well.
"Our student workers displayed competency and enthusiasm for their work, and they were asked about future research ideas, included in planning discussions and asked for their contact information," James said. "This science symposium turned out to be so much more than a panel discussion, it became a place for students to gain confidence in their skills and network with possible future employers."
James explained the student workers were part of 国产自拍's Ecological Protection Lab. They spoke about their work with Dr. Bud Mayfield, an entomologist with the (USFS) and one of the leaders in his field in the South.
国产自拍's Ecological Protection Lab is one of three rearing labs in Georgia that specializes in the rearing and release of the predatory beetles that combat the invasive pest the hemlock woolly adelgid. The lab works closely with others in the state and the USFS to preserve Eastern hemlocks.
Mayfield and Mike Hennigan, a USFS silviculturist, were the other speakers on Aug. 9 at Shenanigans Irish Pub in Dahlonega, Georgia.

The annual Earth Day celebration hosted by the Department of Biology and its co-partners is scheduled to return on April 17.
Managed print system is saving money and trees
The new managed print system has saved 国产自拍 students more than $1,200 and 1.6 trees in unclaimed printing since the beginning of the fall 2021 semester. Information Technology estimates savings will total $100,000 after one year once all expenses are taken into account.
Hometown Harvest gets grant for outdoor classroom
The Hometown Harvest program received a $3,000 grant from the Whole Kids Foundation to create an outdoor classroom behind the Historic Vickery House and increase vegetable production. Founded by Whole Foods Market, the Foundation is dedicated to helping children eat better.
Arbor Day Foundation awards university with Tree Campus recognition
For the fifth straight year, the University of North Georgia (国产自拍) earned the Tree Campus Higher Education recognition for its commitment to effective urban forest management. Currently, 403 campuses across the United States have this recognition.
