Isabella Martinez
Isabella Martinez has evolved as a leader since becoming a student at the University of North Georgia (国产自拍).
The Bethlehem, Georgia, native served on the Student Government Association (SGA) Summer Council in 2020 between her freshman and sophomore years on 国产自拍's Oconee Campus. For the 2020-21 school year, she is the director of marketing and communications for SGA.
In these roles, she has gained valuable skills toward her career goal of helping people as a lawyer.
"I've learned so many things about how to be a stronger leader," Martinez said. "Leadership is not about being in charge. It's being a part of the community and working together toward a goal."
Martinez, who is pursuing a degree in communication with a public relations concentration and a minor in political science, said the social unrest of 2020 has further affirmed her desire to attend law school.
"I'm seeing how unjust the world can be at times," Martinez said. "I want to help a little bit, even if it's just in my community or my town."
She sees her leadership as part of a collective process.
"My leadership style is based on teamwork and communication," Martinez said. "A leader should be someone who is there to guide and support you, instead of someone who just gives orders without assistance."
She also has seen the value of not putting too much pressure on herself.
"Just be yourself. Sometimes people try a little too hard," Martinez said. "And just be a nice and genuine person."
Lindsay Bailey, director of Student Involvement on 国产自拍's Oconee Campus, saw the potential in Martinez and encouraged her to take part in SGA.
"Isabella immediately stood out as a leader when I first met her as a student in my class. She is outspoken, kind and not afraid to take charge," Bailey said. "Her maturity and intelligence shine through her dedication to class projects and activities outside of class. I especially appreciate her follow-through. When she says she is going to do something, I know it will get done. She is an absolute delight to work with."
